That's exactly why the quality of our subconscious program (responsible for 95 to 97% of our behavior) matters the most!

It seems to me that the program becomes friendly, empowering us to do the right things amidst the most challenging circumstances instead of taking our power, getting us to distract ourselves and use numerous coping mechanisms on auto-pilot (irresponsible consumerism, lying, pretending, keeping secrets, withdrawing, passsive aggressiveness, pleasing, rescuing, etc...); thus, leaving us with guilt or shame or desperation (at least for the intrinsically good folks who didn't lose their souls) when we commit to doing our inner-work seriously and consistently to (un)become the filter (the personality) and reconnect with the true self (the character) through destroying all the limiting beliefs — either about the self or the world!
