Indeed, rising from the ashes takes tons of humility, my friend. Sadly enough, some folks, in a trial to cope with their hash environment, needed to amplify their self-esteem as a survival strategy which resulted in developing narcissistic tendencies. Some lost their soul battle and turned bad to evil (NPD). But, even for the inherently good ones, having average to high tendencies leaves no room for humility to receive the light. Consequently, becoming self-absorbed and a victim is the natural outcome. I’m afraid advising a self-centered person to work on their victimhood mentality won’t change that much given that the problem is far deeper…
