I usually go for a middle solution between the two brilliant ideas you suggested! I express firmly yet gently my lack of interest in the topic at all! That way, they don't have to be rude and I don't invest any second of my time and energy in a meaningless and worthless discussion! Why care if I'm sure it's going nowhere?
